Zlatibor is a mountainous area in which rural people are predominantly involved in livestock farming.
In order to preserve their centuries-old tradition of dressing, one of the main natural raw materials they process is wool.
In its use in everyday life, farmers also expressed their artistic experience. Breeding of merino sheep that produce much higher quality fleece prevailed in recent decades,
increasing the possibilities of domestic industry, both for the household use and for the market that
shows increasing interest in the clothing. The process of making woolen products begins with sheep shearing
in late April and early May. Once, after washing in the creeks and combing, the fleece was hand-spun.
In the fifties of the last century, distaff was an inseparable and lifelong
companion of almost every woman in the villages of this region.
Additionally, small or large spindle was necessary. Today, the entire process of wool fiber production is mechanized, allowing for uniform thickness and length of fiber,
as well as uniform number of twists and good protection of fibers.
This has significantly improved the quality and durability of wool products.
Little Zlatibor’s village Skržuti is typical for that area, with a strong orientation towards the old crafts and handicrafts.
Decades ago, knitting became a core activity for which the area is renowned around the world.
Good reactions of those who respect the quality, tradition and handicrafts as an art, are incentive to keep this old craft.
Bearing in mind that knitters are fairly long-living, starting to knit from girls age to the old age,
knitting as a craft undoubtedly will be held for the long time ahead, passing from generation to generation.
For previous generations of Golubovic’s family, knitting was as a casual job in leisure moments,
but in late 60’s it grew into their core business. Stanimirka-Caja Golubović realized in that time that her little handicraft
wool business can support the family. For many years on, her “golden” hands became more and more mastery,
her ideas more and more diverse, so that her first handicrafts’ patterns still apply to some of the new models. Today the whole family Golubović is involved in handicraft of exclusive wool clothes, from the conception to the realization.
